Reinforced concrete is a versatile construction material, which when properly designed can act as a strong and durable material for a large variety of construction projects. These can range from simple short columns for small buildings to large concrete superstructures such as bridges or stadiums. The use of reinforced concrete is an appealing resource, as it involves the use of basic constituent materials, such as cement, sand, aggregate and water. Steel reinforcement bars are used to strengthen the concrete in tension. Another benefit is that concrete can be cast by local labour and easily shaped into any form. It is also fire resistant and it can be subjected to extreme climatic and environmental conditions with minimal damage. The corrosion of the reinforcing steel could cause structural instability and furthermore failure.
